“Who Has a Say?” – Community Consultation and Consent Trends in the Oil and Mining Sectors

25 Feb 2016
This is a side event of the EITI Global Conference in Lima, Peru. This event will allow for information sharing and dialogue among national and international stakeholders on the latest global and regional trends relating to community consultation and Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) for oil, gas, and mining projects. Representatives of the Peruvian government, an indigenous federation, and the private sector will comment on two new research reports which will be presented by Oxfam and the Due Process of Law Foundation. Oxfam’s Community Consent Index 2015 examines publicly available corporate commitments regarding community rights and community engagement, with particular attention to FPIC. The Right to Consultation and FPIC in Latin America evaluates the implementation of the right to consultation and FPIC in six Latin American countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, and Peru. The panel will also discuss the application of the right to consultation for indigenous peoples in Peru.

The event is organised by Oxfam and the Ministry of Culture of Peru. For further information, please contact Scott Sellwood (SSellwood@OxfamAmerica.org).
