During the next General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), to be held in Guatemala the first week of June, three members will be elected to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). Given the importance of these elections and to encourage civil society and the public in general to learn more about the candidates, we invite you to an informal discussion with Professor Javier de Belaunde, the candidate to the IACHR presented by the Peruvian government.

Professor de Belaunde is a recognized and respected Peruvian lawyer who has been part of different initiatives promoting democracy, human rights and the Rule of law.  He played a key role in the discussions and design of a comprehensive reform of the Peruvian justice system to make it more accessible, transparent and independent. He currently teaches at the Catholic University of Peru where non-profit law is one of his areas of expertise. As a specialist on this issue, he has accompanied the establishment and consolidation of the most important civil society organizations in Peru.  He has been Ad hoc Judge at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and recently, with the Cyrus Vance Center for International Justice, is promoting a Pro Bono Network in the region, in collaboration with the Commission and Court of Human Rights, on behalf of the victims.
